This involves removing the lower limbs of the tree to increase the space beneath.
This is commonly done to let light through a very dense lower crown, but also to stop the branches encroaching on the space below if, for example, the tree overhangs a shed, footpath, driveway or road. Crown lifting can also improve the quality of flowerbeds and shrubs beneath the tree by allowing more light to reach them.
